Juneteenth National Independence Day commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. In a review of state administrative calendars and personnel websites, Pew Research Center found that at least 33 states and Washington, D.C., will give most state government workers a paid day off Friday, though state recognition varies widely.

In California and North Carolina, eligible state workers may be able to take Juneteenth off through a personal or floating holiday policy, but it is not an automatic paid day off for most state government workers, Pew found.

In Kansas, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, only executive branch employees get a paid day off. In West Virginia, state employees will get Friday off, but for West Virginia Day, not Juneteenth. And in New Mexico, Juneteenth is not a permanent legal holiday, but the state personnel board has approved it as a paid day off annually since 2022, according to Pew.

What’s Closed On Juneteenth?

Because Juneteenth is a federal holiday, most federal offices will be closed Friday. Federal employees receive the day off under the federal holiday calendar.

Post offices will be closed, and regular mail delivery will not occur Friday, June 19, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Regular mail delivery and retail services are expected to resume Saturday, June 20.

Many banks may be closed or operating on limited schedules because Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Customers should check with their local branch before visiting.

What’s Open On Juneteenth?

Most grocery stores, major retailers, restaurants and private businesses are expected to remain open, though hours may vary by location. Pew notes that most stores, supermarkets and other businesses remain open on federal holidays, but schedules can differ.

Public schools, libraries, city halls, county offices and local courts may follow state or local holiday schedules, so residents should check with their local agencies before heading out.
