Local Overeaters Anonymous Group to Celebrate IDEA Day

(Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 15, 2021) – This coming weekend, the local group of the international organization Overeaters Anonymous (OA) will hold a virtual event in recognition of IDEA Day – International Day of Experiencing Abstinence. Observed annually across the globe, IDEA Day encourages members to begin or reaffirm their abstinence from compulsive overeating and compulsive food behaviors.
The Milwaukee Area Intergroup of OA – which serves members residing south to the state border and north to Green Bay and beyond via community-based support meetings – will gather for IDEA Day on Saturday, November 20 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. via Zoom. This year’s IDEA Day will feature three recovering OA speakers sharing their experience, strength, and hope through topics such as how abstinence differs from a plan of eating; the realities of body image and a healthy body weight; and key tools for maintaining abstinence.
“Abstinence is a contented way of eating whereby a member gives up foods and behaviors he or she determines to be personally problematic,” said Lizabeth L., Public Information Chair of the local OA organization. “While abstinence looks different for each member, the effect is the same – fear and demoralization that were once associated with food are replaced with hope, willingness, honesty, fellowship, and so much more.”
