📰 News we're reading

1. Revitalize Milwaukee receives grant to expand workforce development program (onmilwaukee.com) — A Milwaukee nonprofit, Revitalize Milwaukee, just secured a $1.3 million federal YouthBuild grant to expand its Building Hope construction training program for local young adults without diplomas. Participants will help rehab City of Milwaukee homes in Washington Park, earning certifications, pay, and career connections while improving neighborhood housing for low-income residents.

2. UW-Milwaukee Police discontinue use of Flock cameras (wearegreenbay.com) — UW-Milwaukee has ordered all 18 Flock license plate cameras on campus removed and shut off, following Milwaukee Police's recent decision to sharply limit their use. Officials stress that remaining garage readers are isolated to parking operations only. The move comes amid public concern and a misconduct case involving Flock data, putting surveillance technology under renewed scrutiny for Milwaukee residents.

3. Survivors of violence turn personal experiences into a call for change at Milwaukee gala (cbs58.com) — Milwaukee residents affected by violence gathered at UW-Milwaukee for a city-hosted Survivors of Violence Gala, honoring grassroots advocates and offering space to grieve and heal. Speakers from the Department of Community Wellness and Safety stressed preventing future violence and uniting the city so fewer families endure similar loss.

4. Diesel prices rise nationally, impacting gas and grocery costs in Milwaukee (wisn.com) — Milwaukee drivers are now paying about $5.94 per gallon for diesel, a spike that's pushing up transportation and grocery costs across the city. Shoppers and vendors at the South Shore Farmers Market describe higher prices on everything from fuel to seeds, while hoping gas and diesel stabilize before everyday essentials become even harder to afford.
