📰 News we're reading

1. This Wisconsin Area Is America's No. 2 'Marriage Desert': Report (patch.com) — Central Milwaukee is highlighted as one of the nation's most pronounced "marriage deserts," with only 14 percent of householders ages 15 to 64 being married and just 22 percent of households with children headed by married parents. The report, based on 2020 Census data, compares Milwaukee's low marriage and married-parent rates to other major cities and underscores a broader divide between urban cores and more marriage-heavy suburbs.

2. Milwaukee's Financial Strains Growing, Warns Policy Forum (urbanmilwaukee.com) — Milwaukee's proposed 2027 budget would avoid layoffs and keep tax increases modest, but only by making the largest reserve withdrawals in at least a decade. Rising costs for police, fire, and pensions are outpacing revenue growth, and state law requires further public safety hiring, so city leaders are weighing long-term fixes as the Common Council reviews the plan this month.

3. This City Service Plants Trees in Yards for Free (milwaukeemag.com) — Milwaukee homeowners can now request free trees for their yards or the strip between sidewalk and curb through the city's Urban Forestry Fund and forestry request line. The program targets neighborhoods with less tree cover and flooding risk, and provides suitable species plus planting guidance, while residents handle planting and watering to boost shade, air quality, and property values.

4. Wisconsin Tech Month Aims to Connect Milwaukee's Startup Community (shepherdexpress.com) — Milwaukee residents can plug into Wisconsin Tech Month events, including Milwaukee Tech Week, to meet founders, investors, and mentors and explore startup resources close to home. From Marquette to local libraries and business centers, organizers aim to break down silos, expand funding connections, and open tech career paths, including new programs for justice-involved residents.

5. Milwaukee imposter teacher suspect arrested in Brookfield ruse to steal car (wisn.com) — Milwaukee residents may see new charges and possible extradition for a 23-year-old woman accused of posing as a substitute teacher at Rufus King High School and making inappropriate remarks to students. After being released on bond in Milwaukee, she was arrested in Illinois in connection with a Brookfield car theft, with additional charges being reviewed in Waukesha County.
