Shankarapryan “Shan” Sivanushanthan is J.I. Case High School Valedictorian

Racine Student Excels in Academics, Sports and Community Involvement

J.I. Case High School has announced
that Shankarapryan “Shan” Sivanushanthan of Racine will be recognized Sunday,
June 5 at the school’s graduation ceremony, as the 2011 Valedictorian for the
senior class of 594 students. While his grade point average was not available,
his status as #1 speaks volumes.

In addition to academic success as
an AP scholar and member of National Honor Society, Shan is also an
accomplished athlete and active member of the community. He did not respond to
e-mail and telephone requests this week, but Patch.com has highlights of some
of his notable high school milestones.

Sports Feats: On WIRunners.com, Shan's personal bests are recorded as 16.85 seconds in 110-meter hurdles at the WIAA Division 1 Wisconsin Lutheran Regional; 9.49 seconds in 55-meter hurdles; and 5’2” in high jump.

According to the site, he ran track for Case High School since 2009, with
highlights including a 17.10 finish in the 110- meter hurdle at WIAA Division 1
Wisconsin Lutheran Regional
, placing 6th in the preliminary levels
in May 2010. In April 2009, he ran a season best time of 18.33 in the 110-meter
hurdle at Racine Horlick Northstar Invitational, in which he placed 14th
in the preliminary competition.  

Community Involvement: Shan also received UW-Parkside's Community Outreach Project Award, for students in the Case Minority Visionary Program (MVP). The effort was implemented in 2009 to
increase awareness for minority students of post-high school and college
education options. Shan was one of more than a dozen students who mentored Case
freshmen in the program.

Youth as Resources, a community investment committee of United Way of Racine County, elected Shan as Board Chairperson during his senior year. The board was responsible for leading 24 youth and adult members responsible for awarding community service grants
for projects throughout Racine County.
