Soccer Star Likes to Write, but Not About Himself

Andrew Koetz of Mount Pleasant had a hard time filling out his scholarship application.

Andrew Koetz will graduate from Washington Park High School on June 5. He enjoys writing, but when it came time to fill out his scholarship application from the Racine Parent-Teacher Association, he had a hard time writing about himself.

In his essay, Andrew says that society’s emphasis on test scores, grade point averages, and earning potential can lead students to believe that those are the things that determine their value in the world. But he went on to say that he hopes his worth is determined more by how he may have impacted a child’s life, or loved people like there was no tomorrow—and that’s the way he plans to change the world.

Andrew was awarded a John Aceto Memorial Scholarship. He will attend Wheaton College in the fall.
