Officers responded and found an unlocked storm door and that a broken basement window. Examination of the residence showed drawers open in the bedroom, police reported.

According to his criminal complaint, when officers made contact with the home owner, he told police that he had left the home around 11:45 am to go to a Christmas party in Waukesha. He said there had been a safe in the bedroom which contained personal papers, social security card, stock certificates, two checkbooks and rental property paperwork and about $1,500.00.

According to police, the safe was missing from the residence. He said he had piled blankets on top of the safe, and those blankets were on top of the bed when the police entered.

In an unusual plot twist, police report that they spoke with an Oak Creek resident, who had placed the original calls to the Oak Creek Police Department on Dec. 25 about the person walking around the house. The resident said that Young had called her on Dec. 24 at around 5:21 pm and she called him back at about 5:35 pm. He told her to call the Oak Creek Police Department and report a guy walking around the residence - despite the fact that the resident lives a good five miles from the burglary site. The resident asked why Young didn’t make the call, but he said that he couldn’t and begged her to make the call.

According to his criminal complaint, once arrested, Young initially denied any involvement in the burglary. Upon arriving at the booking room at the jail, he started to cry and said, “I did it. I was high. I just didn’t want my grandpa to know ‘cus I love him.”

Young told police that he originally went to his grandfather’s house to get some clothes for a Christmas party. He didn’t have a key to the residence, so he removed a glass pane from the basement window. He got the things he wanted and then walked out of the residence. He then kicked the basement window, breaking it, his criminal complaint stated.

Police say Young went to he grandfather’s bedroom and sole the safe. He broke open the safe using a hammer and took about $1,000.00. He spent all of the money in two days on heroin and cocaine. He said that a couple of days after the burglary, he drove back and hid the safe in the back yard.
