Author Becky Pourchot Dives into the Dark Side with "Open Souls"

New Book adds to impressive collection of thrilling novels by the rising author

Acclaimed author and speaker, Becky Pourchot believes that everyone has a good and bad side - and on the road to self-discovery, they face the task of choosing to identify with one or the other, or in some cases, both. This is the case in her new book, “Open Souls,” a riveting novel that promises to take readers on a roller coaster ride into a world of mystery, romance, darkness and paranormal activity.

Set in the historic city of St. Augustine, FL, the story begins in 1662 during the Golden Age of Piracy. It then leaps to present day and into the life of Olivia, a shy and sexually repressed baker and Brad, a gruff tattoo artist who one day open a strange box that causes their lives to be turned upside down.

“I call it a romantic thriller with a paranormal twist,” Pourchot said. “It’s a psychologically driven novel where the characters are forced to look at themselves and figure out who they really are. Ultimately, they have to bring their two sides together, becoming stronger people by accepting their dark sides and eventually merging their light with their dark.”

“Open Souls” speaks to Pourchot’s own personal journey from a sheltered suburban upbringing to life by the ocean filled with curiosity, exploration and self-discovery. A self-described “hippie gyspy pirate,” she grew up a shy and quirky Jewish girl in the Midwestern town of Madison, Wisconsin under the watchful eyes of her father, a psychiatrist and her mother, an artist. She was afraid of scary stories and ghosts until her teenage years and despite her love for writing and storytelling, she never saw herself becoming an author.

“I was very reluctant to become a professional writer,” she recalls. “I took it in stages because I thought there was no way I could write a full book. Little me writing a book? I didn’t think I could get it published. But there were always people around me that were encouraging me and that made a world of difference.”

Now, six books later, not only is she a writer, but one who enjoys taking her readers on exciting and engrossing literary excursions. Pourchot’s previous three books, part of a collection called the Hungry Ghost Series, centered on the life of a fifteen year old girl and were hugely popular among teenagers and ghost story enthusiasts. With “Open Souls,” however, she will capture a more mature audience who enjoys excitement, romance and psychological twists.

“I am really excited about where these books are taking me and I can’t wait to see the reception and hear the feedback to “Open Souls.” I think people will love it, and this is only the beginning of some of the new things I have in store.” she said.

Throughout the course of 2015, Pourchot will be extremely active with upcoming appearances at book signings, festivals and shows.

Also, as the creator of the increasingly popular YouTube blog series “That’s So Bizarre,” viewers will see more stories of the most bizarre, jaw-dropping experiences of everyday people through weekly interviews.
