Waukesha Armed Robbery Downgraded to Retail Theft

Police in Waukesha are searching for a suspect in a black vehicle after he reportedly stole a Verizon store Monday afternoon.

WAUKESHA, WI — Waukesha police are searching for a theft suspect after police reported that he displayed stole two iPhones, and fled the scene. According to police reports, the case was called in as an apparent armed robbery, however on Tuesday police told Waukesha Patch that the case has been downgraded to a retail theft case.

Waukesha Police said Tuesday that after reviewing the evidence, including surveillance footage, as well as reviewing eyewitness accounts, there was no evidence of an armed robbery, use of force, or of an implied weapon.

Waukesha police responded to the Verizon cell phone store at 1921 Silvernail Road just after 1 p.m. on Monday.

According to police reports, a black male about 30 years old, standing about six-foot-three wearing gray sweatpants and a gray sweatshirt walked into the store to steal an iPhone X and an iPhone 8. Police told Patch on Tuesday that the suspect was only in the store for a matter of moments before he ran off with two iPhones.

According to police reports, a witness told police that he saw a black Monte Carlo "whipping" through the Qdoba lot shortly after the robbery.

Police reports stated that the likely getaway vehicle was a black Pontiac Grand Prix with dual exhaust on the right, and both license plates removed.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and made checks of several area stores, including reviewing surveillance footage tapes.

Waukesha North High School was temporarily on lockout Monday as police investigated the case.
