United Way Connects the Community to Volunteer Opportunities

(May 7, 2014)—United Way in Waukesha County would like to invite volunteers to the following volunteer opportunities:

Summer Lawn Mowing Help – Waukesha County

Are you looking to make a difference in someone’s life? Do you have one or two free hours every few weeks? Interfaith Senior Programs is seeking volunteers (15 and older) for lawn mowing beginning in May and running through October for seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Waukesha County. This unique opportunity allows the volunteer to set their own schedule with the client, and the commitment can be as little as once per month depending on how fast the grass grows. Volunteers will be matched with clients who live close to them. Volunteers for this opportunity must be 15 years or older and may be required to possess their own equipment.

Green Thumbs Needed – Menomonee Falls

ARCh Camp Pow Wow in Menomonee Falls is lucky to have its own fenced in garden that is handicap accessible. Each summer, over 200 campers get to learn about plants, help water, weed, and get to enjoy the vegetables that grow in the garden. To make this garden a success each year, we need volunteers to help with initial weeding, mulching, and planting of the garden. Just a few hours of your time can last all summer and be enjoyed by kids and adults with disabilities. Dirt is involved, so prepare to get dirty. Everyone is welcome.

Recreation Assistant for Adults with Disabilities – Waukesha

Volunteer will assist adults with disabilities with recreational activities. Volunteers will be needed Monday-Friday anywhere from 9am-3pm. Activities could include rock climbing, bowling, fishing, cross country skiing and working at the YMCA. Each week is different on the activities that are needed for assistance. Requirements: Volunteers must be a minimum 18. Applications and background checks are required.

Leave Your Paw Print on the World – Waukesha County

Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care is looking for friendly, well-mannered and calm dogs of all shapes and sizes (and their people!) to join our Loyal Friends Pet Team. These Special Volunteers are needed to provide a little companionship, comfort and even some wet kisses to our terminally ill patients and their families. YOU are needed to help them do it! Our opportunities are flexible and based upon your availability. Pet Team Volunteers serve both patients and families in the home and/or nursing facility within the area of the volunteer's choosing. Typically once trained, a Pet Team Volunteer visits one time per week on a schedule that works best for the Pet Team and patient. Requirements: Minimum age is 18 years old. Dogs must be certified through Delta Society Pet Partners, The American Kennel Club or Therapy Dogs International. In addition to Pet Team Volunteers being certified, the team is also interviewed by our staff and the appropriate documentation processed with certifying organizations and Season Hospice prior to visiting with patients.

All volunteer training is provided. No medical experience is required.
