Election Day In Jefferson County: When, Where To Vote

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The general election is Tuesday, and as hundreds of thousands of absentee ballots have already been cast in Alabama, this election will look somewhat different with the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

Election protocol was reportedly not a problem in the primaries in July, but Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill has allowed any voter who might be concerned about COVID-19 on election day to apply for an absentee ballot.

Many polling locations around the county have changed since the last election, so voters are asked to check their polling places for any changes. (polling locations can be found here).

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Amendment One

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to provide that only a citizen of the United States has the right to vote.

Amendment Two

Proposing an amendment to increase the membership of the Judicial Inquiry Commission and further provide for the appointment of the additional members.

Amendment Three

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to provide that a judge, other than a judge of probate, appointed to fill a vacancy would serve an initial term until the first Monday after the second Tuesday in January following the next general election after the judge has completed two years in office.

Amendment Four

An amendment to authorize the Legislature to recompile the Alabama Constitution and submit it during the 2022 Regular Session, and provide a process for its ratification by the voters of this state.

According to the Grace Newcombe from Merrill's office, more than 300,000 absentee ballots had been requested by the deadline Thursday and at least 240,000 absentee ballots had been successfully returned.

Absentee ballots received by the day of the election Nov. 3 will be opened for tabulation beginning at 7 a.m. that day, according to an order announced by Gov. Kay Ivey in September.

Earlier this year, Merrill authorized anyone concerned about COVID-19 to apply for and cast an absentee ballot through selecting the box on the application which reads as follows: “I have a physical illness or infirmity which prevents my attendance at the polls. [ID REQUIRED]”

Newcombe said Monday that voters who have not mailed in a ballot within the time frame specified, but are able to get to their polling locations can still cast a vote in person.
