Roberson's resignation, coupled with council members Sheila Tyson and Lashunda Scales winning seats on the Jefferson County Commission, means the council will now have three vacant seats. Council President Valerie Abbot said the city does not have the budget for a special election, so the seats will be appointed.

The city government has undergone quite a face lift since this time last year. A new mayor in Randall Woodfin, three new council members in John Hilliard, Darrell O'Quinn and Hunter Williams - and now three more new faces to come - will mean the council will have six new members - the most turnover since 2001, when eight new council members were elected.
