Southern Research will keep its flagship lab while leasing back some space, and UAB will activate long-underused buildings, potentially bringing more jobs, labs, and investment into Birmingham's growing biomedical district.
   

2. Spoiled chicken, moldy cake found at Fairfield market with lowest score of the week (wbrc.com) — Health inspectors recently cited El Sol Cantina & Taqueria in Birmingham for missing a certified food safety manager, date-marking issues, and a missing backflow prevention device, earning it a 79. Other Jefferson County spots in Fairfield and Homewood also failed to meet satisfactory standards, and all must be reinspected within 60 days, giving local diners reason to check recent scores.
   

3. Every penny counts: Birmingham foundation launches campaign to fund community investment (al.com) — A Birmingham-based nonprofit, the Penny Foundation, is launching a new "Every Penny. Every Person. Every Possibility" campaign to raise $10,000 in support of Black-owned businesses, HBCUs, and community-led projects. Building on a 2024 partnership with the City of Birmingham that granted $125,000 to local small businesses, the group is urging residents and companies to contribute at any level to strengthen neighborhood economies.

Battery split points with Birmingham in 2-2 draw on Berry's brace (live5news.com) — Birmingham Legion FC drew 2–2 at Dunnavant Valley Fields against the Charleston Battery, with all four goals coming in a wild first half. The match, moved from Protective Stadium due to scheduling conflicts, saw Birmingham score first and later equalize, while Charleston's Miguel Berry notched a brace and postgame comments highlighted frustration over missed chances and dropped points.
   

5. The typical U.S. household with a cellphone bill spends $1,200 a year (consumeraffairs.com) — Birmingham residents are paying a steep price for staying connected, with a median annual cellphone bill of about $1,658, well above the national median of $1,200. A new report urges households to scrutinize their plans, check for unused lines or extras, and compare options, since even trimming $25 a month could free up $300 a year.
