1. Retired Marine's cleaning of veterans' graves raises awareness of neglected historical Birmingham cemetery (wbrc.com) — A retired Marine in Birmingham is single-handedly clearing overgrown veterans' graves at historic Shadowlawn Memorial Park, Birmingham's largest African American cemetery. His volunteer work is drawing attention to years of neglect, unclear responsibility between city and county, and an inactive Jefferson County Cemetery Board, raising pressure for local leaders and community groups to step up.
   

2. Suspect charged in deadly shooting at west Birmingham home (al.com) — A Birmingham man was fatally shot inside a west Birmingham home after an argument, and a 50-year-old Pleasant Grove resident has now been charged with capital murder. Police say the suspect fired into the Jesse Owens Avenue residence, and Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The suspect is being moved from city jail to the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
   

3. UAB launches new treatment service for rare breast condition (abc3340.com) — UAB in Birmingham has launched a new steroid injection service for idiopathic granulomatous mastitis, giving local patients a more targeted, less invasive treatment option. The program, led by a UAB radiologist, is already helping one Birmingham mother manage painful flare-ups and is part of a broader, personalized care approach the hospital plans to expand.
   

4. 2027 JeffCo budget includes money for City Walk, commissioners' discretionary funds (birminghamwatch.org) — Jefferson County has approved a nearly $1 billion 2027 budget that includes $250,000 to help maintain City Walk BHAM under the rebuilt I‑20/59 in downtown Birmingham. Commissioners also boosted their discretionary funds to channel more money into individual districts, while planning millions for roads, vehicles, and major building projects countywide.
   

5. Birmingham Roundup: Mountain Brook shuts out Helena in 1st home game, Center Point rolls (al.com) — Birmingham-area football fans saw Mountain Brook's defense dominate Helena 37-0 at home, highlighted by a fumble-return touchdown and a powerful ground game. The roundup also notes Center Point's 43-0 rout of Carver, with quarterback Noveian Gardiner accounting for three scores and the Eagles' defense adding points, setting up more regional matchups next week.
