Galleria Suspect Captured; UAB Coach Gets Raise: Week In News

The week of Nov. 26-30 was full of big headlines, mostly from a shooting at the Riverchase Galleria that has gained national attention.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - News in the Birmingham area this past week got a good bit of national attention, as the shooting at the Riverchase Galleria on Thanksgiving night became the focus of national news outlets who viewed the incident - which resulted in a Hoover police officer shooting and killing 21-year-old EJ Bradford - as another example of police wrongly killing a black man.

In addition to that news item, national sports news turned its attention to Birmingham for more positive reasons, as UAB's football team - which didn't even exist during the 2015-2016 seasons, captured the Conference USA championship. The successful season prompted UAB to offer head coach Bill Clark an extension and a raise.

The United States Marshall's Office has confirmed that the suspect in the Thanksgiving night shooting at the Riverchase Galleria has been captured in Fulton County, Georgia. Reports say the suspect is 20-year-old Erron Brown.

LGBTQ Group Wants Birmingham To Ban Conversion Therapy For Minors

A local LGBTQ group is petitioning Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin to ban the practice of conversion therapy for minors. If passed, Birmingham would be the first city in Alabama to ban the controversial therapy - a practice that claims to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.

Authorities Seek Family Of Woman Who Died In Nursing Home

Ellon Gail Benton died Nov. 17 at Oak Trace Care and Rehabilitation in Bessemer. However, authorities have been unable to locate any of the 77-year-old woman's family. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office said Benton was discovered about 6:30 a.m. in her bed.

UAB Extends Contract With Bill Clark After Historic Season

University of Alabama at Birmingham Director of Athletics Mark Ingram has announced that an agreement in principle has been reached with Blazer Head Football Coach Bill Clark to make Clark the highest-paid coach in Conference USA, pending approval by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.

Police Capture Carjacking Suspects In Roebuck Walmart

Two suspects in a carjacking Thursday were chased into a Walmart in Roebuck and eventually arrested by Birmingham police.
