BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham metro area dodged a potentially bad weather system that was heading its way last Thursday, but that did not keep the Magic City from having its fair share of big news during the week last week.

March For Our Lives Draws Thousands To Railroad Park

Joining nearly a million people across the country Saturday in a demonstration to bring awareness to gun violence, an estimated crowd of 5,000 people convened at Birmingham's Railroad Park for its March for our Lives rally.

City Council Approves Funding For New Birmingham Stadium

The Birmingham City Council Tuesday voted to approve a resolution that would commit $90 million over 30 years toward a new stadium in the Uptown district of Birmingham's downtown. Supporters of the measure included UAB football coach Bill Clark, who called the vote "A Great moment for Birmingham."

Birmingham's 'Brunch Bill' Passes Legislature

Gov. Kay Ivey signed a bill that would allow Birmingham restaurants to serve alcohol on Sundays starting at 10 a.m. Currently, restaurants are unable to serve alcohol until noon on Sundays. The bill, dubbed the "Birmingham Brunch Bill" leaves the decision for earlier Sunday alcohol sales now in the hands of the Birmingham City Council.

Alabama Sheriffs Keeping Money Meant For Prison Meals

Although news of Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin pocketing at least $750,000 of left over jail food money is new, sheriffs using taxpayer money for their personal use is nothing new in Alabama. An investigation into the matter by the Southern Center for Human Rights and Alabama Appleseed showed this practice may be much more widespread than we knew.

Sheriff's Office Gives Out Free Gun Locks For Project Child Safe

Sheriff Mike Hale of Jefferson County announced his office would participate in Project Child Safe, which involves giving away free cable gun locks to residents in an effort to keep guns more secure in the home.
