BIRMINGHAM, AL - The news during the week of Sept. 24-29 was mostly consumed by national news, as Judge Brett Kavanaugh was being reviewed for his Supreme Court seat. And that was one of the headlines that made its way into local news on Patch, along with some intriguing stories involving an investigation into two missing hotel owners in Irondale and a brief lockdown at Vestavia Hills High School.

Suspect Captured In Possible Homicide Of Irondale Hotel Owners
A suspect in the possible murder of the owners of the Siesta Motel In Irondale has been captured. The couple, 77-year-old Ching Kao and his wife, 75-year-old Siumei Kao, were reported missing over the weekend and police suspect they were nurdered, after they discovered video footage of the couple being beaten, and blood stains at the scene of the crime.

2018 Alabama State Fair Kicks Off At Oak Mountain
The 2018 Alabama State Fair is back in Pelham at Oak Mountain State Park. This weekend, the fair officially kicks off, and will last until October 7. The fair will begin each day at 4 p.m. The event will feature more than 40 carnival rides, 30 special events and food from 20 concession stands.
Man Wielding Gun Causes Lockdown At Vestavia Hills High School
A brief scare involving a man wielding a gun near Vestavia Hills High School forced the school to go into lockdown mode for 13 minutes Tuesday morning. Reports indicated there were no injuries and the school was able to proceed to normal operations without incident.
Fire In Lakeview Destroys Apartment Building, Law Office
A fire early Thursday morning in Birmingham's Lakeview district caused the complete loss of an apartment building under construction and an adjacent law office. As well, one fire fighter was hospitalized with a broken leg.
Doug Jones To Vote 'No' On Kavanaugh
In a statement that likely surprised few of his constituents, Alabama Senator Doug Jones said he will vote against confirming Brett Kavanaugh's nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court.
