Mountain Brook's Hamp Sisson: 5 Questions with the QB

Patch caught up with Mountain Brook Spartans senior quarterback Hamp Sisson to talk about the 2017 season, and beyond.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL - Coming off an impressive win over Gulf Shores High School in its opening game, Mountain Brook High School has a good amount of momentum to begin the season, and Spartans quarterback Hamp Sisson is excited to be along for the ride. However, an injury kept Sisson from participating in the MBHS spring game against Shades Valley, and some worried the senior signal caller could miss the beginning of the season. Sisson was not afraid. He said he felt confident in his recovery, and feels even more confident in how his team looks in 2017.

I know you are coming off an injury. Was there ever any doubt that you would be able to return to the field?

Immediately after surgery, I was told I would be back to 100 percent within 6-8 weeks. I was very blessed to have Dr. Cain and Dr. Waldrop perform my surgery. I was cleared in early July and have felt great since then. There was never any doubt about returning to the field because of the doctors and therapists that I was so blessed to work with.

After an impressive opening win, are there any areas you feel like the team can improve looking ahead?

The team definitely had a great start in the first game. After all first games, there are always some glaring issues that need to be taken care of. We need to fix timing on certain routes and polish the plays we didn't have success with on Friday. I know the defense made some major adjustments at halftime that helped them to completely stop the Gulf Shores offense in the second half. They will continue to make those adjustments and improve as we on the offensive side of the ball will do.

You are getting some attention from colleges. What schools have been recruiting you, and what is that experience like?

It has been an awesome experience, although pretty stressful at times. I have scholarship offers from Army, Wofford, Jacksonville State, and The Citadel. I have talked to several Ivy League schools as well as schools like Samford and Furman, among some others. It's a great feeling to be wanted by these schools, but right now I am completely focused on the season at hand.

As a senior leader, what do you feel is your role for the younger players coming up?

Being a senior is extremely important to me. I feel like I have a role to play as a servant leader and role model for the younger players. I enjoy the opportunity to mentor some younger guys through the sport of football. It's great getting to build these relationships and bond with these guys through playing the sport we all love. At the end of the day, it is one of our goals as a senior class to leave the Mountain Brook football program better than we found it.

A state championship would obviously be great for the Spartans, but what are some things you hope this team accomplishes this season?

Another big goal for our team is a state championship. Last year we were knocked out in the first round of the state playoffs. We definitely have some unfinished business to take care of. Everyone is rallying together, but we are making sure to take it one snap, one drive and one game at a time. Our team is keeping our eyes on the prize while taking it one step at a time.
