Couple Involved In Police Standoff Charged With Hoover Crime
A standoff between a couple and police in Roebuck this week ended in surrender by the suspects, and an arrest for a Hoover crime as well.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A married couple involved in a four-hour standoff with police Tuesday in Roebuck have been charged with an ATM theft in Hoover. Jason Alan Shafer, 42, and Stacy Mae Morris Shafer, 33, both were taken into custody in the 100 block of 93rd Street North in Birmingham and taken to the Hoover Jail where they were charged in connection with the theft of an ATM from the Walgreen’s on Ross Bridge Parkway in Hoover in July.
Birmingham police and U.S. Marshals responded to the scene about 2:30 p.m. in search of two suspects in the 100 block of 93rd Street North in Roebuck. Birmingham's SWAT team and patrol officers set up a perimeter and tried to negotiate with the people inside the house. The couple eventually surrendered.

The incident for which they have been charged in Hoover occurred July 12. Hoover police responded to a burglary in progress at Walgreens, located at 5271 Ross Bridge Parkway. An alarm company received an activation at the business and observed three black male suspects on video taking an ATM and loading it onto a flatbed truck. A Hoover Police officer in the area got behind the vehicle and attempted to stop it on John Hawkins Parkway.
A chase ensued which involved one of the suspects firing shots at a Hoover police officer. Bessemer police later that day arrested 33-year-old George Franklin Staples III of Fairfield as he was walking near the area where the truck was found. The U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested a second man, 35-year-old Eddie Charles Medley of Bessemer, on July 18.

The Shafers served as lookouts for the two men who were caught on security cameras in the ATM theft on July 12, according to a report by the Hoover Police Department.
Jason Shafer was charged with burglary and receiving stolen property, and had bond set at $60,000. Stacy Shafer was charged with burglary and unlawful possession of a controlled substance and marijuana, and had bond set at $43,000.
