Hoover parents push for cameras in special education classrooms as district prioritizes staffing (wvtm13.com) — Hoover parents of nonverbal students are pressing Hoover City Schools to install cameras in self-contained special education classrooms, arguing video would protect both children and staff. District leaders say they're prioritizing grants for more teachers and therapists instead of limited state camera funding, leaving families waiting since 2022 for a decision or clear timeline.
   

2. 32 family-friendly Halloween events in Birmingham (bhamnow.com) — Hoover families have a full slate of Halloween fun this month, from a free fall festival at the Hoover YMCA on October 24 to Bluff Park's Bash on the Bluff and big celebrations at the Finley Center and Hoover Library. The guide also highlights dozens of nearby trunk-or-treats, movies and festivals across the Birmingham area.
   

3. Shake Shack on 280 among new $1M+ building permits (bhamnow.com) — Several major construction projects are headed to Hoover, including a $1.5 million Shake Shack on Highway 280 and new residential and commercial builds in Blackridge, Harrison Circle and Inverness Center. These permits signal more dining, housing and business options coming for Hoover residents in 2027 and beyond.
   

4. Oak Mountain State Park brush fire contained; all trails reopen except Blue Trail (wvtm13.com) — Oak Mountain State Park has fully contained a 279-acre brush fire, and all trails except the Blue Trail are now open again for visitors from Hoover and nearby communities. Hoover firefighters joined several area departments and forestry officials, who say no homes were threatened and no injuries reported despite the fire's size and proximity to urban areas.
   

5. Who's up, who's down? Shelby County food inspection scores show surprising results (al.com) — Shelby County's latest restaurant inspections brought mixed results for Hoover spots, with Mellow Mushroom posting one of the month's lowest passing scores at 85 while Sushi Village improved to a strong 96. Overall, no establishments failed, and more than two dozen county locations earned perfect 100s.
