The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Mobile.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Mobile! Like many of you, the Patch team is taking some time off to celebrate the New Year, so there will not be a newsletter in your inbox tomorrow. We appreciate your understanding of this slight pause in our schedule, and I will be back on Monday with the next edition of the Mobile Daily! Now, here's everything happening around town today.

First, today's weather:

An a.m. shower; mostly cloudy. High: 75 Low: 70.

Here are the top 3 stories today in Mobile:

  1. On Thursday, the Archdiocese of Mobile announced that students and staff at all Catholic schools must wear masks due to the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in Alabama. This policy applies to all school personnel and students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Principals will contact families with further information as precautions are re-evaluated in the coming weeks. (FOX10 News)
  2. Bethelyn Crawley of Mobile is speaking out after her two grandsons became the latest victims of gun violence. Police are still investigating the drive-by shooting after Crawley's home on Clarke Street was hit with over 20 bullets. The boys, aged 9 and 6, suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. After undergoing surgery, the boys are expected to make a full recovery. Crawley implores the shooters to turn themselves in. (utv44.com)
  3. Some Mobile County residents have expressed environmental concerns about a new plan from the State Port Authority to use dredging sediment for a new island south of the Causeway. The plan indicates the sediment will be used to create a 1,200-acre island in Mobile Bay, which is raising questions about how the project may affect the quality of the area's water. Concerned residents can share their comments with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through Jan. 3. (NBC 15 WPMI)
