Here are the top stories today in Mobile:
- Every single month, a local group gathers to march against gun violence in Mobile. The members of Moral Vigilantes Pursuing Progress (MVP), founded by Adrienne Edwards, has been taking their message to the streets every first Saturday since September, and they plan to continue visiting neighborhoods all across Mobile and Prichard, alongside Mobile police detectives and officers. "We're going to continue to do what we do to support and bring awareness to the victims and to the victims' [families]," said Lawrence Battiste, Mobile Public Safety Director. (WKRG News 5)
- Jo Bonner, the new president of the University of South Alabama, says he hopes to build relationships and learn from those already in the school community. Bonner formally accepted the position on Thursday to take over the position after former president Tony Waldrop retired earlier this year. He spoke to the school's Board of Trustees to address those who questioned his limited academic background, and said he "hopes those people will meet him halfway and give him a chance." (WVUA 23)
- Alabama Power's James M. Barry Electric Generating Plant, the largest in the state, plans to bury a heap of toxic coal waste into the Mobile River system. Will "Plant Barry" and its coal ash pond put one of the nation's most pristine wetlands at risk? (CNN)
- After receiving a letter from a Mobile girl who wanted a black and white kitten for Christmas, "Santa" coordinated with the City of Mobile Animal Services to deliver a special holiday surprise to her. (NBC 15 WPMI)
- Mobile's baseball history will soon come to life as Mayor Sandy Stimpson and a City committee will choose one of five artists to create the statues for the Port City's Hall of Fame Courtyard. (Lagniappe)
