📰 News we're reading

1. State leaders break ground for Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project (waka.com) — State and federal leaders have officially broken ground on the $3.2 billion Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project, the largest transportation effort in Alabama history. Over about five years, Mobile-area drivers can expect a new six-lane bridge, restriped Bayway lanes, and future tolls that could include commuter passes and ALGO transponder discounts to ease I-10 congestion.

2. Final phase of McGregor Avenue Project in Mobile (fox10tv.com) — If you drive North McGregor Avenue in Mobile, expect more construction as crews begin the final phase of the long-running improvement project from Spring Hill Avenue to the roundabout. City leaders urge drivers to slow down, watch for changing traffic patterns, and give workers space as they push to finish this key corridor upgrade.

3. Waterspouts and flash flooding reported in south Alabama Sunday (al.com) — Coastal south Alabama, including the Mobile area, is dealing with waterspouts, flash flooding and repeated heavy downpours, with rain rates up to 5 inches an hour in some storms. The National Weather Service office in Mobile reports ongoing radar problems limiting public access to imagery, and warns that more heavy rain and flooding remain possible along the coast through early Monday before conditions gradually improve.

4. 'They were very thankful;' Mobile donations make it to Venezuela following earthquakes (wkrg.com) — Mobile residents' donations collected through the Mobile International Festival have finally reached Venezuelan earthquake survivors, delivering thousands of essential items and medical supplies. Organizers in Mobile say the need remains urgent and are still gathering goods and money to ship about 20 remaining boxes, inviting locals to keep supporting families struggling with shortages and low wages.

5. This year's El Niño looks a lot like 1997. What happened then? (wboy.com) — Mobile is highlighted as one of the cities drenched during the powerful 1997-98 El Niño, when it saw about 17 inches of rain in January alone. With this year's El Niño expected to be even stronger, forecasters warn of heightened risks for flooding in some regions, drought in others, and major global weather disruptions that could echo or exceed those past extremes.
