Here are the top three stories in Mobile today:

  1. A new nursing apprenticeship program at Coastal Alabama Community College aims to attract more students to the field. Right now, there are almost 3,000 openings for registered nurses across the state. Nursing students accepted into the apprenticeship program can start earning earlier. Associate degree nurses that are pursuing their educational requirements to become registered nurses have to put in 675 clinical hours, which students could soon be getting paid for if they qualify.   2. On Thursday, a mother from Mobile County was arrested after the death of her newborn baby girl. The Mobile County Sheriff's Office says 34-year-old Amanda Malpas was using heroin and other drugs during her entire pregnancy. Paramedics say they found the mother holding her baby with a needle still in her arm. (WEAR)
  3. Mobile police were called to a report of shots fired at The Grounds around 1 a.m. Sunday during a concert. A female victim was struck in the upper back after a firearm was discharged during the concert. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. An arrest was made, but the suspect has not been identified. (Fox 10 News)
