Paul Tyson: 5 Questions With The Hewitt-Trussville QB

Patch caught up with Hewitt-Trussville quarterback and University of Alabama recruit Paul Tyson for a quick Q & A.

TRUSSVILLE, AL - The Hewitt-Trussville High School football team begins the 2018 season with high hopes, having made an impressive run at a state championship in 2017, only to fall short in the quarterfinals. The Huskies were undefeated heading into the AHSAA playoffs, but lost to eventual state champ Hoover. This season, HTHS has high expectations, as do football fans everywhere for the Huskies star QB, Paul Tyson.

Tyson, as most anyone who follows Alabama football knows, is the great grandson of legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. He was recruited and offered scholarships from dozens of schools across the country, including USC, Notre Dame, Purdue, Clemson, Oregon, Florida State and Michigan, in addition to just about every SEC school.

Tyson eventually chose the Crimson Tide and is part of a 2019 recruiting class that is shaping up to be one of the best in the Nick Saban era.

I feel like we have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. With our great coaches and athletes I believe we will be very good.

Obviously the goal going into any season is a state championship. But what are some other goals you hope to accomplish personally and as a team this season?

Honestly, I don’t have many personal goals. I just want to be the best player I can be and I want to help lead my team to the state championship.

So you've committed to Alabama. How hard was that decision and how did making that decision before the season began affect your goals for season?

The decision was honestly pretty easy after talking with all the coaches and recruits it just felt like home. Part of the reason of me committing early was just to help me focus on high school my senior year.

Your recruiting class at Bama is shaping up to be one of the best in the Saban era, which is saying a lot. How involved are you in trying to influence recruits to join your class?

For me, I am just doing the best I can to help Coach Saban get the recruits he is looking for. I am all in for Alabama and helping recruit means you're all in, so I’m doing the best I can to help this 2019 class.

As everyone knows, your namesake is your great grandfather Paul "Bear" Bryant. Does that carry with it some added pressure as you head to the Capstone next year?

No sir, it really doesn’t add pressure to me! My great grandfather is my family and it means a lot to me knowing his history and I know it might bring this surrounding my name, but I embrace that and it helps me improve my game!

Hewitt-Trussville's opener against Cedar Grove High School in Georgia will be televised nationally on ESPN on August 25 at 2 p.m.
