Teen Shot After Returning To Friend's Home In Clay

A 15-year-old was shot when she was mistaken for an intruder at a friend's home in Clay.

CLAY, AL — A 15-year-old girl was shot by her friend's stepfather after the girl and her friend returned to a home in Clay early Sunday morning. The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 5900 block of Debbie Drive.

Sgt. Joni Money of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the victim and her friend were returning to the friend's home, and the friend's stepfather reportedly thought someone was breaking into the home.

The stepfather retrieved his firearm and went to investigate, and when the two encountered each other, the girl was shot in the abdomen, Money said.

The teen was transported to Children’s Hospital with serious injuries. Jefferson County Sheriff’s detectives are continuing the investigation.
