The Jefferson County BOE appointed Dr. Walter Gonsoulin as the permanent superintendent after he served on an interim basis since September.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Jefferson County Board of Education approved the permanent hire of Dr. Walter Gonsoulin as superintendent, making him the first African American to head the system in its 120-year history. Gonsoulin had served as the interim superintendent since Sept. 27.
Gonsoulin previously served as deputy superintendent of school and community support, a position he had held since 2017. He also served as assistant superintendent with the Starkville, Mississippi, school district.
He takes over for Dr. Craig Pouncey, who was hired as president of Coastal Alabama Community College. Pouncy had been the JeffCo superintendent since 2014.
