TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Multiple unconfirmed reports are indicating that Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will be named the next head coach for the University of Texas Longhorns, after it was announced that head coach Tom Herman had been relieved of his duties on Saturday.

First reported by Horns247, Herman reportedly has a $15 million buyout for the final three years on his contract and was notified by the school on Saturday that he wouldn't be retained as coach.

During his four seasons coaching the Longhorns, Herman went 32-18.

Sarkisian — a former head coach at Southern Cal and Washington — won the 2020 Broyles Award for the nation's top assistant last week, becoming the third Alabama coach to do so. As a head coach, his career record is 46–35 and 2-2 in bowl games.

While he was heavily pursued by the University of Colorado last season and even reportedly drew interest for the head coaching vacancy at Auburn, many in the Crimson Tide community viewed Sarkisian as the heir apparent to replace Tide coach Nick Saban when he inevitably retires.

Leading the nation's second-ranked scoring offense that features three Heisman candidates, Sarkisian's biggest moment of the season came after Saban tested positive for the coronavirus in November, forcing him to miss a highly-touted Iron Bowl against Auburn.

Sarkisian would lead the Tide from the sidelines on its way to a 42-13 victory over the Tigers, receiving praise from Saban and the Alabama faithful alike.

It is unclear at this time if Sarkisian will coach in the College Football Playoff championship game against Ohio State on Jan. 11.
