Name: "Clara Maass: She Gave Her Life" Exhibit Closing Reception

On September 25, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., the Gorgas House Museum will host a closing reception for our exhibit, "Clara Maass: She Gave Her Life”. Admission is free and Cuban treats will be provided.
During the reception, Dr. Erik Peterson (Department of History, The University of Alabama) will be give a brief presentation on the transition from humoral theory to germ theory and the Yellow Fever Commission’s work in Cuba, providing historical and scientific context for Clara Maass’s role in the experiments.

Le Guin, we see Bloom developing his groundbreaking theory of poetic influence, transforming himself into a public intellectual, and reckoning with the meaning of his own legacy.
While Bloom’s public persona was oracular, sure, and often combative, his letters are inquiring and provisional, revealing his overarching obsession with good writing. The presence of love, as the letters show, was always vital to how Bloom worked as a reader. Filled with delightful anecdotes and poignant observations, these letters—many of them published here for the first time—offer a new window onto twentieth-century letters and Bloom’s long and illustrious career.
Harold Bloom (1930–2019) was an American literary critic and the Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Yale University. His books include The Anatomy of Influence and Take Arms Against a Sea of Troubles. Heather Cass White is an English professor at the University of Alabama. She is the author of <a href="https://ernestandhadleybooks.com/book/9781250849106" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Books Promiscuously Read: Reading as a Way of Life</a>, among other volumes.

The Paul W. Bryant Museum will celebrate the book release of Remember the Rose Bowl: The Alabama Crimson Tide’s Storied 100-Year History in “The Granddaddy of Them All” by Tommy Ford and Mark Mayfield on Friday, September 18, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Admission to this event is free.

<h2>About the Book</h2>
Remember the Rose Bowl commemorates the 100th anniversary of Alabama’s landmark appearance in the 1926 Rose Bowl — a game that forever changed the trajectory of Alabama football and helped transform the national perception of college football in the South.

On January 1, 1926, Coach Wallace Wade’s undefeated Alabama team faced the heavily favored Washington Huskies in Pasadena, California. Alabama’s dramatic 20–19 victory became one of the defining moments in Crimson Tide history, introducing Alabama football to a national audience and establishing a legacy that continues a century later.
The impact of that afternoon stretched far beyond a single football game.
Remember the Rose Bowl explores the players, coaches, games and moments that have connected Alabama to Pasadena across 100 years of Crimson Tide football. From the trailblazing 1925 team that made the journey west to the generations that followed, Ford and Mayfield tell the story of how the Rose Bowl became woven into the identity and tradition of Alabama football.
Drawing upon the collections and historical resources of the Paul W. Bryant Museum, the book brings together photographs, stories and historical details that allow readers to experience one of the most important chapters in the history of Alabama athletics.
The title Remember the Rose Bowl recalls a phrase that became part of Alabama football tradition following the Tide’s early trips west — a reminder of the standard established by the players who first carried Alabama onto the national stage.
Throughout the decades, Alabama returned to Pasadena and built a remarkable Rose Bowl legacy. Those appearances created legends, established traditions and helped cement Alabama’s place among college football’s most storied programs.
The publication is part of the Paul W. Bryant Museum’s continuing mission to collect, preserve and interpret the history of University of Alabama athletics and to ensure that the stories of the athletes, coaches and individuals who built that legacy are preserved for future generations.

Join us inside the Jones Archaeological Museum Earth Lodge on September 19, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a snake safety program with Dylan Taylor of <a href="https://www.aces.edu/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alabama Extension</a>. Dylan will&nbsp;present on&nbsp;Alabama’s native snakes, covering identification and safety, with live snakes on hand throughout the program.&nbsp;
Fall marks the second breeding window for many Alabama snake species, making this an ideal time to learn how to safely&nbsp;identify&nbsp;and coexist with snakes in the field.&nbsp;
This is a come-and-go event.
