Captain Marty Sellers said Wednesday after state troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency first responded at 11:14 a.m. to the scene, a man was found trapped under a vehicle near the Skyland Boulevard exit. This was initially believed to have been the result of an accident, he said, but witnesses on the interstate provided investigators with more information that led them to believe the act was intentional.

After gathering more details, Sellers said investigators believe there was an argument prior to the incident, prompting the man the exit the car before he was struck. Sellers went on to say that the victim was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police eventually arrested 28-year-old Angelica Quintana, of Demopolis, charging her with murder.

Quintana and the victim — identified as 27-year-old Dennis Melton, also of Demopolis — were involved in a domestic relationship at the time of the incident.

"We haven't determined yet, for sure, what their history is," Sellers said of the couple. "She didn't give us much information to go on."

Sellers said Quintana, who does not appear to be cooperating with police, remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, with her bond set at $500,000.

Despite still piecing together the events leading to Melton's death and the subsequent arrest of his girlfriend for murder, Sellers encouraged those in need to seek help if they are victims of any form of domestic violence.

"Domestic violence, of course, happens every day in probably all locations," he said. "For people involved in domestic violence situations, there's a lot of help out there for you. You just first need to call the authorities and let us get involved and there are a lot of resources in the community that will help with that ... get out of the situation if you can, call law enforcement let us come, let us help."
