Ivey Sets Dates For House Special Elections In Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday signed a proclamation setting special election dates for House District 63 following news that State Rep. Bill Poole would step down to become state finance director.

The special primary election will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 19, with a primary runoff on Nov.16 if necessary. The special general election will be on Tuesday, Feb. 1. The winner will then fill Poole's unexpired term, which will come up again for election in November 2022.

The qualifying deadline for Republicans and Democrats to qualify will be Friday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m., while the deadline for independent or minor party candidates will be Oct. 19.

House District 63 includes Tuscaloosa, Northport and greater Tuscaloosa County.

Only one candidate has announced their intentions to run — former Tuscaloosa City Council President Cynthia Lee Almond. She is running as a Republican.

While Almond will seek to be the next new face on the Tuscaloosa delegation, both State Rep. Rodney Sullivan, R-Northport and State Rep. Rich Wingo, R-Tuscaloosa, both announced they would not seek new terms in 2022, which will open up two more seats on the local delegation.

In Sullivan's House District 61, Retired Northport Police Department Captain Ron Bolton — a Republican — remains the only candidate to have formally announced their intentions to run to fill the seat.

Additionally, State Sen. Gerald Allen, a Tuscaloosa Republican, also announced his plans to seek re-election next year, as Patch previously reported.
