Lamar County Man Gets 17 Years In Prison For Sexually Abusing Child
A Sulligent man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for sexually abusing a child younger than 12
SULLIGENT, AL — A Lamar County man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for sexually abusing a child younger than 12, according to a release from District Attorney Andy Hamlin's office on Wednesday.

Hamlin said the victim reported abuse by Byron Keith McCalpin, 51, in March 2020, which resulted in a grand jury indictment on the felony charge the following May. Per Alabama law, sexual abuse of a child is a Class B Felony that is punishable by 10-20 years in prison.

McCalpin entered a guilty plea Monday and was given a day for day sentence. He will not be eligible for parole or good time credit, Hamlin said, due to the nature of the charge in which he was convicted.
McCalpin will also be required to register as a sex offender.

“The Sulligent Police Department and the DHR workers who investigated this case were
determined to bring this predator to justice," Hamlin said. "They conducted a sensitive investigation to find out what happened. They built a really good case which led to this conviction without the child having to relive this event in court during a trial."
