New 'Reverse' Format Planned For West Alabama Christmas Parade

This year will mark the 45th installment of the West Alabama Christmas Parade, which will feature a new format to promote public health.

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority (PARA) will host a “Reverse” West Alabama Christmas Parade on Dec. 7 in Bowers Park.

This year will mark the 45th installment of the Christmas event and PARA says the reverse-style parade will provide a creative way to hold a parade while embracing safety and social distancing. The format has proven successful in other communities, the agency said, which served as the inspiration to adopt the concept.

PARA Public Relations and Marketing Manager Becky Booker said the parade, which was first held in 1976, represents a "beloved historical tradition" in the community.

“PARA had to figure out a safe way for Santa Claus and his reindeer to kick off the holiday season," she said. "The reverse aspect means that the floats, decorated vehicles, bands, etc. remain stationary, while the viewers will drive through the park to see the parade."

Registration will require an exact length of vehicle entry, which will prove a crucial aspect of planning the parade's format.

A new option for parade participants will be spaces designated for “Holiday Scenes,” which will feature lights and decorations, but no in-person participants the day of the parade. This option is offered for groups or business who want to get involved and show their support while not being physically present in the parade.

Grand Marshal nominations are also due by Nov. 2.

Nomination forms can be found by contacting PARA or visiting its website.

Parade entry forms, rules and the parade route will soon be available online, with the registration deadline set for Nov. 15, to allow time for layout according to category and size. PARA said information on the Tree Lighting Ceremony will also be available soon.
