Officials To Break Ground On New Benjamin Barnes YMCA Later This Month

The City of Tuscaloosa on Tuesday announced it will officially break down for the new Benjamin Barnes YMCA facility on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The City of Tuscaloosa on Tuesday announced it will officially break down for the new Benjamin Barnes YMCA facility on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The public groundbreaking is set for 9 a.m. in the McDonald Hughes Center north parking lot at 3011 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

As Patch previously reported, $10 million was set aside to construct the new YMCA branch in the city's West End, with $500,000 coming from Elevate Tuscaloosa and the remaining $9.5 million from the city's fiscal year 2022 bond issuance.

The goal of the new branch is to provide athletics, year-round child care and educational programming for children and families in west Tuscaloosa and beyond.

The new branch also plans to offer amenities, programs and services that are complementary to nearby facilities

The City of Tuscaloosa says construction on the new YMCA branch is expected to be completed in 2024.
