Tuscaloosa Receives $17.1M Federal Grant For University Boulevard Improvements

Tuscaloosa announced a federal grant for over $17.1 million to go toward improvements on along University Boulevard.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The City of Tuscaloosa announced it will be on the receiving end of a federal grant for over $17.1 million to go toward improvements on along the University Boulevard corridor.

According to the announcement, the City of Tuscaloosa will match around $10.5 million of the grant. The project will be geared toward improving safety and accessibility along University Boulevard, while also prioritizing pedestrian access.

As part of the effort, the city plans to increase storm drain capacity, while adding streetscape and sidewalk enhancements, improvements to security and safety, and the inclusion of bike lanes and underground utilities in several locations.

The city then explained that improvements will mainly take place between Lurleen Wallace Boulevard North and Wallace Wade Avenue, in addition to the area between 25th Avenue East and Crescent Ridge Road.

“The City of Tuscaloosa could not be more thrilled to be among the recipients of the Department of Transportation’s RAISE Grant," Mayor Walt Maddox said. "These funds will give us the opportunity to make improvements to one of the major arteries connecting Tuscaloosa, thereby providing better connectivity across our community."

This grant is part of an over $18 million initiative by the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve local infrastructure in Alabama.
