University Of Alabama Establishes Cecil Hurt Memorial Fund
The University of Alabama has established a memorial fund to honor the life of the longtime columnist for the Tuscaloosa News.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — In an effort to allow those wishing to donate to the memory of longtime Tuscaloosa News columnist Cecil Hurt, a memorial fund has been established at the University of Alabama.

"Memorial gifts made to the Cecil Hurt Memorial Fund will be used to support students at The University of Alabama with the final designation of the fund to be defined by Cecil’s family and close friends in the days ahead," the university said in an announcement on Friday.

Hurt, who first started at the newspaper in 1982, died Tuesday after an extended battle with pneumonia and other complications. He was 62.
Following news of the beloved sportswriter's death, scores of tributes have been seen from celebrities and locals alike, including a petition to rename the press box at Bryant-Denny Stadium to honor Hurt. As of the publication of this story, the petition had garnered more than 2,500 signatures.
