Update Given After Suspect Shoots At Officers In McCalla
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said the suspect turned the gun on himself after shooting at least 30 rounds at officers Wednesday.

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — A man is in critical condition after shooting at law enforcement officers in McCalla Wednesday night, eventually turning a gun on himself. Tuscaloosa Police Department Captain Marty Sellers addressed local media Thursday on behalf of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, which has assumed the investigation.
Sellers said at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday evening, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call for a domestic disturbance involving a gun at a residence in the 11000 block of Apple Valley Road in McCalla.

Prior to the Woodstock officer arriving at the residence, Sellers said the suspect — a man in his 60s — threatened his wife and son and fired shots. Once the officer arrived, the suspect immediately began shooting, using multiple long guns and forcing the officer to take cover. A Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputy also responded and immediately began receiving gunfire.
Neither officer was injured during the incident.

"Both officers took cover and attempted to determine the location of the suspect," Sellers said. "About 30 rounds were fired by the suspect during the incident and officers did not have the opportunity to return fire while on scene."
As more law enforcement arrived at the location, Sellers said the suspect shot himself. Officers then took him into custody and requested medical attention. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, with VCU saying he is currently in critical condition.
Sellers said the suspect's identity will not be released until he is formally charged, but did say two warrants had been obtained for attempted murder.
Since the shooting involved a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputy, Sellers pointed out that the investigation is being conducted by officers in the multi-agency unit who are not employed by the county.
"We go out of our way to make sure each [case] is handled impartially," he said.
