The city in a press release said the updated 2020 decennial census count reflected that Tuscaloosa's population in 2020 was greater than 100,000 people. This is in contrast to the original count, which was conducted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when the Census Bureau reported Tuscaloosa's total population to be 99,600.

Annual Census estimates over the last three years have predicted the city's population to be 109,000 in 2021 and 110,600 for 2022
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said the city submitted a review case to the 2020 Post-Census Group Quarters Review program after the University of Alabama and city officials worked together to identify an undercount of at least 1,100 residents living in University on-campus housing.

Maddox went on to say that the review had been accepted as of Sept. 18 and now reflects Tuscaloosa's population count to over 100,000 residents.
“Census population estimates are a critical factor in determining federal grant allocations, as well as creating opportunities for economic development,” Maddox said. “I’m pleased that the Census Bureau has accepted our review to more accurately reflect the tremendous growth in our City over the past few years, even during the time of the pandemic, as this data will continue to make a difference for our schools, our roads, economic development, our seniors and more in the years to come."
