NORTHPORT, AL — It was a busy agenda Monday night in Northport for the last regular City Council meeting of 2022, as the year's end will see the closing of one mayoral administration and the beginning of another.

As Patch previously reported, Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon in November announced he would resign at the end of the calendar year following a failed push to see a stretch of street renamed in front of his personal place of business off of Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard.

Monday night also represented Herndon's final city council meeting before resigning at the end of the day of Dec. 31.

"I love my city, I do," Herndon said as the meeting came to a close. "I love my council. I love my staff. I love everybody that's making the city of Northport a great place to be ... I'm going to pray for you every day and I like said, I'm not going anywhere."

As Patch reported Monday night, District 3 Councilman John Hinton was elected to be the next council president and will now be next in the line of succession for the mayor's office.
