3 Men Sentenced In Connection With Killing Of Oakland Cop

Three men involved in the killing of retired police officer Kevin Nishita in Oakland nearly five years ago were sentenced to prison Tuesday.

OAKLAND, CA — Three men involved in the killing of retired police officer Kevin Nishita in Oakland nearly five years ago were sentenced to prison Tuesday. Laron Gilbert, 31, pleaded guilty to first degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.

Two accomplices, Shadihia Mitchell and Hershel Hale, were sentenced to 25 years in prison for robbery with enhancements, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. On Nov. 24, 2021, Nishita was working as a security guard for a camera crew of a local news station outside a business in Oakland.

Nishita was gunned down as he tried to prevent a reporter from being robbed, according to the District Attorney's Office. All three men will be eligible for parole.
