EAST BAY — Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott made a life-altering donation by giving $3 million to the East Bay Asian Youth Center, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The gift was made through Scott's charitable organization, Yield Giving.

"MacKenzie Scott’s gift represents an unprecedented validation of our approach and our history of uplifting the lives of young people impacted by poverty, violence, and trauma," said David Kakishiba, EBAYC Executive Director. "This gift enables us to expand our work and our impact in Oakland and Sacramento."

EBAYC will use the money for neighborhood-based direct services and grassroots policy advocacy to improve the lives of children, youth, and families.

According to EBAYC, it went through an extensive vetting program by Yield Giving that examined potential for sustained positive impact, stable finances, a multi-year track record, measurement and evidence of outcomes, and experienced leadership representative of the community served.

Scott is the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The billionaire has given away more than 20 percent of her fortune in the past few years, Fortune magazine reported earlier this week, including nearly $2.2 billion in 2023 to 360 organizations. Most of the gifts support early learning, access to affordable housing, race and gender equity, health equity, and civic and social engagement. As happened in this case, Scott typically gives no-strings-attached donations to local charities.
