85-Year-Old Alameda Man Charged With Attempted Murder
Police say he shot his wife and himself in an attempted murder-suicide at a care facility last month.

ALAMEDA, CA — An 85-year-old Alameda man was arraigned Wednesday on an attempted murder charge for an incident at a care facility last month in which he allegedly shot his wife and then turned his gun on himself, police said today.
Florentino Morata, who's also accused of inflicting great bodily injury, is scheduled to return to Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland on Jan. 4 to enter a plea.
The shooting occurred at the Crown Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at 508 Westline Drive in Alameda at about 10:15 p.m. on Nov. 22, police said.

Officers found Morata's 85-year-old wife, who'd been shot, as well as Morata, who had an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Sgt. Darin Tsujimoto wrote in a probable cause statement that Morata shot his wife two times in an attempt to kill her after she was admitted to the nursing home for medical reasons.

After shooting his wife, who's identified in court documents only as Jane Doe, Morata shot himself in an attempt to kill himself, Tsujimoto said.
The shooting was captured on a security camera inside the nursing facility and Morata also made a spontaneous statement that he'd shot his wife, according to Tsujimoto.
Morata and his wife were transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland to be treated for their injuries.
Morata remained at Highland until Sunday, when he was released and then booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, where he's being held without bail, Sgt. Alan Kuboyama said.
But his wife remains hospitalized, according to Kuboyama.
The gun that Morata allegedly used in the shooting was recovered at the scene, police said.
Morata and his wife live on Burbank Street in Alameda, according to court documents.
