Two People, Both 85-Years-Old, Survive Murder-Suicide Attempt

The shootings happened at a nursing home.

ALAMEDA, CA — A man shot a woman and then turned the gun on himself Tuesday night at a care facility in Alameda, but the suspect and victim are both expected to survive, according to police.

The shooting was reported by multiple callers around 10:15 p.m. at the Crown Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 508 Westline Drive.

Officers found an 85-year-old woman who'd been shot, as well as an 85-year-old man with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect and victim are related, police said.

They were transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland where the suspect remains under 24-hour guard.

"As you can imagine this was a traumatic event for everyone who was there," Lt. Wayland Gee said.

Gee added that in 26 years of police work in Alameda he didn't remember anything like that happening there.
The weapon used was recovered at the scene.

Police are planning to seek attempted homicide charges against the suspect, who has been identified
only as an Alameda resident.
