Alameda Kindergarteners Collect Socks For Flood Victims

The project gives them a way to help nearby victims of disaster.

ALAMEDA, CA — Video on the evening news of people suffering can be hard for small children to process, especially if the people on TV live nearby. A recent example is the flooding in San Jose.

One thing that helps - a tangible way to get involved.

Nea Community Learning Center’s kindergarten class happened to be studying weather and what happens when it rains too much. Their teacher saw an opportunity to combine the science learning with a community service project. After consulting with the Salvation Army, the children got involved by collecting socks for the victims.

According to Jana Chabre, Nea’s Assistant Lead Facilitator, “Project-based learning is interdisciplinary and
brings social studies, humanities, math, science, language arts and geography together all at the same time instead of separate processes.”
