Police offer these reminders about the effects of drinking and driving:
DELAYED REACTION TIME
A slowed reaction time can increase the chances of being involved in a collision. If a pedestrian enters the roadway or a vehicle suddenly breaks, it will take longer for the brain to process the situation and react.
LACK OF COORDINATION
Being under the influence affects a person's motor skills, specifically, eye, hand, and foot coordination. The lack of coordination may be seen in a person’s walking, their movements, and the ability to drive.
CONCENTRATION
Being able to maintain safe speeds, monitor roadway conditions, and observe posted roadway signs require a driver's undivided attention, but driving impaired hinders a person's ability to drive responsibly.
IMPAIRED VISION
While under the influence, drivers can misjudge distances, eyesight may be blurred, and eyes may want to close. All of which can result in a minor or severe crash.
