Alameda Rugby Report: Riptide Bests Davis Blue Devils

The girls and boys rugby season is underway on the Island.

The Alameda Riptide defeated the Davis Lady Blue Devils 31-5 in a chilly league match at on Saturday night.

Caitlin Reid scored a try and two conversions, Kalila Patete scored a try and a conversion, while Rachel Fisi'iahi, Michelle Foketi and Da'Nisha "Chocolate" Young-Iatchison scored a try each.

Young-Iatchison also scored Davis' only points as a substitute due to injury. Scrumhalf Ashley Hom and Fisi'iahi received back of the game and forward of the game, respectively.

It was the the final game for Alameda forwards coach Naima Reddick, who was an international player. The Riptide's forwards treated Reddick to an outstanding performance, playing their hearts out in every phase of the game, from rucking to lineouts.

Next up for the Riptide is a home match against the Piedmont Lady Highlanders.

Following the girls' game, the Alameda Islanders were humbled by their elders in a scrimmage match against the alumni under the lights. Next up for the boys is a home game against the Danville Oaks.

Alameda Rugby in its modern incarnation was founded by students Steve Kettlehut, Rory Moore, Samantha Travis and Cameron Stewart in 2002, with Jeremy Castro, Bill DeMar, Craig Stewart, Paul Berman and Bill Travis as the first coaches.

Alameda Rugby alumni have gone on to play all over the world, including Canada, Europe and Afghanistan. They have also joined college teams, including UC Davis and San Jose State. Because rugby is a club sport, players come from all across the Island as well as surrounding communities.
