Armed ATM Robberies Rise In Oakland, Police Warn
Police describe the standard method used by the gunmen and offer safety tips.
OAKLAND, CA — Oakland police issued an advisory to the public Wednesday about an uptick in robberies at ATMs in the city, particularly in the eastside Laurel and Dimond districts.
Police said in the advisory that the most recent robbery occurred just before 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of MacArthur Boulevard.
Typically, victims have just completed their transactions at the ATM and are walking away when armed individuals who confront them and demand their personal property before fleeing on foot or by vehicle.

Police urge the public to follow the following recommendations when using an ATM:
- Scan your surroundings and watch for suspicious persons or activity around an ATM.
- Select an ATM that is in a well-lit and populated area.
- If you get cash, put it away immediately. Do not stand at the ATM and count your money.
- When leaving an ATM location, make sure you are not being followed. If you are being followed, drive to a safe place including the police department or fire station and call 911.
- Call the OPD non-emergency number, 777-3333, to report suspicious persons.
- The advisory concludes with "Working together, we can reduce violence in Oakland."
