SAN FRANCISCO — The eastbound bore of the Broadway Tunnel in San Francisco will be closed for hours each day until emergency repairs are complete after a boom lift on a truck hit and damaged its ceiling on Monday, city public works officials said.

San Francisco Public Works crews were working Tuesday to remove broken tile from the tunnel's ceiling after structural engineers assessed the damage caused by the boom lift aboard a company's flatbed truck.

The tunnel, officially named the Robert C. Levy Tunnel, connects the Nob Hill and Van Ness Avenue areas of the city with the Chinatown and North Beach neighborhoods.

The work is expected to take a couple of days to complete and will require the eastbound bore to fully close from about 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During commute hours, one eastbound lane of the tunnel will remain open.
