Criminals Are Following Residents Home: Police

The residents have been victims of grand theft and robbery. Police offer advice if you think that you are being followed.

ALAMEDA, CA — The Alameda Police Department reports that residents have been followed home from shopping and robbed. The crimes include both robbery and grand theft, because of the value of the items stolen.

The police department has issued safety tips and recommendations to escape from someone following you.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips:

  • Stay aware: Pay attention to your surroundings, especially when leaving banks or businesses.
  • Be mindful of individuals in parked cars who may be monitoring customers.
  • Change your routine: Vary your routes and timing when traveling to/from destinations.
  • When possible, travel with a friend or family member.
  • If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, trust your instincts.

If you suspect you are being followed, take the following steps:

  • Change directions: Make a series of turns to determine if someone is following you. If they continue, head to a public place or the police department.
  • Do not go home. Avoid leading people to your residence.
  • Call 9-1-1, remain on the phone with the dispatcher, and provide your exact location.
  • If possible, note the suspect’s appearance, clothing, and vehicle details.

The police department asks you to report any suspicious activity to them immediately. Their final words, "Stay safe and stay aware."
