Adhara - all-girl Power-Pop Band

All-girl power-pop band Adhara is taking the music industry by storm. The band’s name, which is the name of one of the brightest stars in the solar system, is a statement about the shining, standout quality that the girls cultivate in their music. From their home base in Colfax, the girls of Adhara make fun dance music with a girly twist.

Vocalist Athena Marie Wilcox describes their music as energetic and upbeat. “Our motto is ‘We dare you not to dance.’ You can compare us to Avril Lavigne,” Wilcox said.

The band is currently in the studio working on their first album, and their first music video was released earlier this month. The high-energy, feel-good music has attracted fans locally and abroad.

The four girls — vocalist Athena Marie Wilcox, guitarist Amanda “Jade” Gomez, bassist Robyan Malaca and drummer Madison Armstrong—met on Craigslist and established their identity as a band in 2008. Since that time, they’ve honed their musical skills and created a fun musical style that appeals primarily to young women.

“We write about love,” Wilcox said. “We have a couple of songs that are stronger topics, but mostly we talk about relationships.” All the band’s songs are written collaboratively, with each member contributing. Guitarist Jade Gomez, who writes most of the lyrics and melodies, said the songs are fun and lighthearted, but often with serious meaning behind them.

“We try to keep upbeat and happy but still include social topics and awareness in our lyrics. We’re very female-oriented, so most of our songs are especially for girls,” Gomez said.

Flower-power funk-rocker Groovy Judy and her band follow from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m.; one fee covers both bands.
